It is well-known that property leasing prices on Kings Hill’s Liberty Square are prohibitive and have helped to crush small independent’s who have tried to give it a go. I had an alarming conversation with the lady that runs the card shop yesterday, discussing the demise of Post & Packing who have gone into liquidation today. Her business has fallen away dramatically in the last couple of years after a great start and she is now hanging on in there until her break lease comes up next January, having already given notice. She is not allowed to cease trading there so she is literally whiling away the days until she can shut in January. She has come up with a proposition for someone else to sublet a part of it and Liberty has said no. I feel for the woman, stuck there day in day out, losing money and just wanting out. Competing against ASDA for cards when the prices lower all the time is just no viable and there is not a huge footfall there. The rent cost sounded astronomical to me and they really have pitched it at the chains who they have financial security from.

It seems to me that if someone else was wanting to give something a go here, trialing it out through working with the lady in the card shop could be an option. I know numerous women who have stuff here that they want an outlet for but the rent is not affordable. My suggestion would be, speak to her about stocking your stuff on a sale or return/commission basis while she is sitting there and you could both win. There must be people that could use that space well and help to offset her losses a bit?

I have my thinking cap on but perhaps others will know someone immediately. She is very open to people’s suggestions so go and have a chat with her and see if we can free the ‘captive’ in Liberty Square and perhaps have a bit more choice along the way. Use this as a place to chat about what you would like to see here and it might inspire someone else to start it!

It is hard to believe, as I haven’t been officially advised of anything by Post & Packing themselves (I am a customer), but I am assured that the company has gone into liquidation. A sign appeared on the door that they would not be open for the rest of the day last Wednesday, I saw someone in there on Thursday for a while but all was locked up on Friday and I was told by one of the other shops there that the guy that worked there has been laid off.

I already missed receiving a time sensitive package because it was addressed there, and all my business post goes there. So where does that leave us as Post and Packing are still silent on the matter.

I am very, very sorry for them for having gone out of business but they really should communicate with customers about important things like our post. Anyone know more?

I’ve heard today that some Kings Hill parents have now not been offered either of their top THREE primary schools. That means they not only now can’t get a place in Kings Hill, but the schools around are full too.

I gather there is even a planning permission issue with the pavilions (portable classrooms) that are required to give enough places to those that have places at Discovery School.

There’s some talk around about home schooling too as parents just get fed up with the options available to them.

Please share your up-to-date information about this and let’s see what can be done.

A night of fun, hope and inspiration is planned for Sat 28th April at St Augustine Academy hall (remember Astor of Hever, well it’s been taken over and they have a new hall), Oakwood Campus, Maidstone.

There’s going to be some street dancers, a talk by Darrell Tunningley about how he slid the slippery slope as a youth, from trying out dope, then going up the drug scales to being a dealer, before winding up in prison at the age of 17 when he was caught as a driver in an armed robbery. He has a book out called Unreachable which is a reminder for parents to see how easily some of these things happen. He was not even from a particularly troubled background. It has a happy ending though and that’s the hope that’s on offer.

There’s a youth cafe and a free disco by One Groove (Kings Hill’s own Simon Loveday who many will know from the Gufaa, amongst other gigs), a separate parents’ cafe with ‘tea and sympathy’ for parents of teens.

The event is initiated by Kings Hill Christian Fellowship and supported by CAST (secondary school mentoring) and the Family Trust, Zone 12 Youth Ministries, One Groove (free disco) and street dancers from Lighthouse church in Maidstone.

Contact Grant Phypers for more info. grantphypers@gmail.com or text/call 07795 553363

On Monday I found out that someone had received a parking ticket on Fortune Way, just outside the new Waitrose, where there are no yellow lines or parking restrictions to be seen. The ticket says ‘private road’ as the reason. They’ve been doing some calling around to Kings Hill Resident’s Association; the Police, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council and Liberty Property Trust and even DVLA.

Apparently, as Kings Hill is a private estate, Euro Parks can enforce this as the whole estate is private land and there is no right to appeal. This apparently is actually enforced by the security guards who drive around who we thought were here to ‘keep a benign eye on the place’. It also came to light that because it is a private estate, people can drive here uninsured and with no tax and it can’t be enforced as it is private land. DVLC said they can’t come and remove a vehicle from here and also the security guys have powers to go to the DVLC to make enquiries about vehicles. I am a little alarmed, much as I would love to see less vehicles parked on Milton Lane, but the idea that you don’t even have to put up a sign or yellow lines to enforce this ticketing seems a little sinister and could cost residents a fortune before they realise. They may only have started it today. Perhaps ‘Fortune’ (Way) gave them ideas!. Liberty Property Trust have made parking here rather limited to say the least but the idea that they may capitalise on this by randomly issuing fines because the whole estate is private is ludicrous. I stand to be corrected and I know someone raised the issue of the lack of powers of enforcement on Kings Hill previously and was laughed off!
