According to the website thread at http://talktalkmembers.net/forums/showthread.php?t=56740 the West Malling exchange is due to be FTTC (fibre-to-the-cabinet) enabled by the summer. Good news or a tease that will inevitably slip to 2012? And will ISPs be fast to respond once the exchange is upgraded?

I have checked the “availability” of BT Infinity for my phone line on the BT website probably 4 or 5 times and each time it has told me that the speed would be around 30, and availability end of December. Just checked this morning and guess what, it tells me it isn’t available! Will the next message be “available April 2012″?
Admin: please change title of this blog to “Superfast Broadband getting further away again”.
BT nolonger issuing December date. Dont bother with the “chat” facility on the BT website.. they know nothing about it.
A new green cabinet has recently been installed opposite my house and has had a couple of visits from BT Openreach (they installed cables and then made some configuration changes). I had a chat with them and they said that it was for “Superfast broadband mate!”. So it seems that this will be BT Infinity but when I go on the checker website it only displays the “register interest” button.
I’ve just switched from vFast to Call Flow because my Sure Signal didn’t work very well on the vFast system and it works OK on the new connection. Do I now leave it (it seems to be OK albeit with a few disconnections) or wait for BT Infinity…? Thoughts/Opinions?
Although when I booked mine, the website was indicating it was available, when I tried to place an order it didn’t work. I ended up placing an order over the phone.
I suggest everyone else tries the same, instead of deferring to the website.
I have had a few phone calls with BT Customer services(India a few times) and have been told that I will receive Infinity on my install date of 3rd January 2012.
If for some reason I can not get it the order will be cancelled and I stay with Vfast and go back to sky
The lady at customer services said you can only order if Infinity is available
I agree with Rich and recommend people to call BT and order via phone
I called BT and was given same story as the website shows i.e. they cannot take my order until their system shows it as available to my address (i.e. 2 April).
However, the lady added that it would likely be sooner than April.
Secondly, she said our exchange would defintely be upgraded to 100Mb speed soon afterwards. Knowing BT, I’m not holding my breath.
On a related note, I’ve been without broadband for 2 days now, since the high winds damaged my antenna. I guess that’s the downside and risk of using antennas. It appears VFast will not be fixing it today
I was therefore unable to connect to the office yesterday or today, from home
I’ve asked VFast whether they might wish to offer a failover service for existing customers who migrate to Infinity (etc). i.e. a lower speed, throttled and low capped, cheaper, service that we would likely not use, but would be available for occasions when ADSL/Infinity fail. The events of the last couple of days have demonstrated how useful that could be for me.
@Jas: Plusnet non-contract; about £6/month 10gb limit and runs at 2.8 whereas the previous service over the same telephone lines never bettered 0.45
A good fallback option with a tolerable speed and sensible price and a “get out any time” arrangement.
Graeme,
Thanks, I will definitely look into that today. £6 per month for that specification sounds perfect as a good backup/failover service for me.
I only wish I’d set this up before this week as I still have no internet access at home
VFast have promised it will be fixed today though
Yes, BT Infinity is getting later for some of us at least. Orinally my line check said December, then no date and now…. March! Infinity is well named… by definition you can’t actually get there!
I now get 26Mbps from CallFlow (only 2Mbps up but I rarely upload or send anything of any significant size, and 2Mbps isn’t that slow).
So as far as I’m concerned, CallFlow rocks. And I don’t have to wait an infinity.
Incidentally, I started this thread. It’s interesting to see just how prophetic I was re. BT’s timing I was in the title post…!
John – I was under the impression that Callflow’s max ‘unlimited’ package was capped @ 20Mb?
Have they change this or introduced a new ‘tier’?
Incidently, I’ve recently received a speed bump from around 9Mb to 16Mb.
No idea. It just increased one day…. But I’ll take it!!
Merry Christmas to one and all!!!
Hi,
I spoke to BT regarding this today and they just fobbed me off with the usual excuse of “Whilst digging to lay the new cables they might have come across some difficulties” lol how predictable is that. I was also told that if you are on option 1 or 2 you will have to pay to upgrade to infinity but option 3 will have no charges, just for everyones information.
The agent also told me that on his system it says within the next 3 months, so it might happen before April…..yeah sure /:|
Have had BT infinity installed today and getting 35 down 10 up
Vfast & SKY tv cancelled
I would like to thanks Vfast for a great service and to be the 1st to bring proper broadband to KH
THat’s good news Smash. Could you keep us informed on how it works over the longer term? You are very fortunate to be able to get the service so quickly – a lot of residents are being told “end of March!”
Where on Kings Hill are you?
Hi Graeme
I live Kendall Avenue near Tower view and have had this on order for a month, had to wait until my 12 month line rental had finished with sky.
The engineer was a bit confused why the website says April for infinity.
He had no problems with my install
Its worth giving BT a call if you anyone wants it
Have BT Vision installed as well
I know it is not as good as SKY tv but how many crap tv channels can you watch
@Smash : I checked again this evening by inputting my tel no into the BT website and it still says “End of March”.
Are there any residents near the original village green area who have had an ear;ier date promised?
I was a bit worried when after ordering that the BT website said that it would be not available until April 2012 but after numerous calls to BT I was told that I can receive it.
If I do a check on my phone number or postcode it states that infinity is not available
I recommend everyone to call BT as it seems that the website is giving false info
I called BT today, i’m still getting told it’ll be available within 3 months, site says 2nd of April
I live on Melrose Avenue opposite side to Kendall Avenue…..
Good old BT
Am sure that all they do is look at the website
I ordered when the website said December
There seems to be a bit of confusion between openreach and BT
